USE OF ARTICLES

GENERAL RULE

On ne met pas d'article défini (THE) devant ... No Definite Article (THE) before :

  1. un nom pluriel ET général a plural and general noun
ex : people, students, children, employees, bosses, teenagers ...

  2. un nom indénombrable ET général an uncountable and general noun
ex : water, luggage, furniture, travel...

  3. un nom abstrait ET général an abstract and general noun
ex : freedom, liberty, courage, advice

but : the people I know, the water he drank, the courage they showed ...

Dans ce cas, la situation n'est pas générale mais particulière, du fait de la subordonnée relative limitative. (In this case, the situation is not general but specific, due to the defining relative clause)
